Alameda Unified School District's Senior Class of 2014 Going to College, Military

The school district congratulates the graduates. Recognize any of the names on this list?

As hundreds of seniors across Alameda Unified School District prepare for the end of their school year – and the conclusion of their K-12 education – they are also preparing for an even greater transition: to young adulthood.

Members of AUSD's Class of 2014 are moving on to a broad range of exciting options this summer and fall. The majority of seniors are going to four-year colleges, including all of the University of California campuses and most of the California State University campuses.

Many of our seniors have also chosen to attend community college, either to pursue an A.A. degree, a technical education, or a later transfer to a four-year university. Several have chosen to study abroad, including at Dublin State University and University of British Columbia. A number will begin their military careers, in the US Navy, US Marine Corp, US Air Force, and US Army.  Some are transitioning right into the job force. And one student has made the creative choice to spend a "gap year" studying wildlife rehabilitation in South Africa.

Awards, Scholarships, and Other Recognitions

The number and types of scholarships and awards received by our seniors this year is breathtaking. Those awards include: National Merit Scholarships, a Students Rising Above award, an Incentive Awards Program, a Young Distinguished Artist Award, and President, Dean and Chancellor scholarships at various schools.  Some students received "full ride" scholarships based on their artistic, athletic, and academic achievements. 

Those students are:

  • Cari Hartigan AHS Carnegie-Mellon U National Merit Scholarship
  • Sara Cioppini AHS Fresno State U Soccer scholarship
  • Keelan Doss AHS UC Davis Football Scholarship
  • Sulaiman Hameed AHS Washington State U Football Scholarship
  • Devin Liu ASTI UC Berkeley UC Berkeley Regents and Chancellors Scholarship
  • Bianca Hsueh ASTI UCLA UCLA Regents Scholarship
Many of our students received scholarships from local organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Elks Lodge. Community members, including alumni and the estates of alumni, also provide scholarships each year to our graduating seniors.

This year, those scholarships were awarded to:
  • Beatrice B Barrett Scholarship Grant, AHS science student: Dawnia K Brody 
  • Florinda Bartalini Scholarship Student who demonstrates exemplary community service and wants to pursue a  career in public health (Island High this year): Andrea Renteria
  • Island City Revolving Fund: Anonymous donor to a most deserving student at Encinal High and Alameda High Awarded to: Ryan Lee – AHS, Dzui Hoang – AHS, Carrie Simmons – EHS, Dylan Tonningsen – EHS
  • Irene Wyman MacDonald Award for Teaching Excellence, AHS teacher: Kelly Gregor
  • Marlene and Steve Kofman Scholarship, AHS art student: Mackenzie Cala
  • Ken Brown Scholarship, EHS student: Bany Jauregui
  • Susan Scott Scholarship, EHS student: Minqian (Maycee) Lin 
  • Lou Allen Scholarship, EHS Student: Jordan Santa Maria 
  • Ken and Shirley Van Sickle Award, Academic achievement, leadership: Meriam Salem – ASTI, Amy Fann – AHS, Emma Finn – EHS, Dylan Tonningsen – EHS
