Alameda Hospital Offers Free Stroke Risk Assessments to the Community

Are you or someone you love at risk for a Stroke? Find out at the upcoming Community Stroke Risk Assessment on January 28, 2011 at Alameda Hospital. Stroke is a common disorder and is also known as a brain attack. It happens when part of the brain is injured due to a problem with the blood vessels connected to the brain. This can either be due to a blockage where part of the brain suffocates and dies (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel breaks causing bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). Stroke can cripple and kill. It is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and the third leading cause of death.  Stroke is more common as we get older but it can strike at any age.

Alameda Hospital will offer a free stroke risk screening to members of the community. Screenings will be scheduled monthly with the first one to be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Participants in this screening will receive a free assessment, free health information and educational resources as well a personal review of your risk factors and education about the signs and symptoms of stroke.  All participants must be pre-registered for their screening. The February screening is scheduled for February 24 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  To register for your free Stroke Risk Screening call (510) 814-4362.
