Grad Rates for Students in Alameda Unified School District Higher Than State, County

Graduation rates for Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) remain higher than those of both the state and Alameda County, data released by the California Department of Education (CDE) last week shows.

Taken overall, 84% of AUSD’s high school students graduated in 2013, which is above both the state's graduation rate of 80.2% and Alameda County's graduation rate of 80.4%.

The CDE also tracks dropout rates for high school students across the state. Of the AUSD students who started high school in 2009-2010, 9% dropped out, which is lower than both the state drop-out rate of 11.6% and the county drop-out rate of 11.2%.

The graduation and dropout rate for each of AUSD's high schools was also better than or nearly matched the state and county averages, as shown below.

At 71%, the graduation rate for AUSD's African-American students was higher than that of the county (66.6%) and state (67.9%). The graduation rate for AUSD's Filipino students (90.9%) was higher than the county's rate (90.2%). The graduation rate for AUSD's Asian students (91%) was also higher than the county's rate (86.6%), and the graduation rate for AUSD's White students (87.8%) was slightly higher than the state's (87.6%).  The Hispanic rate was lower than that of the county and the state, primarily due to the fact that a number of Hispanic students did not graduate, but are staying an extra year to finish up their graduation requirements.

"We continue to beat state and county rates, both as a whole and at our school sites," says Superintendent Kirsten Vital. "This is still another reflection of the very hard work that our teachers and students are doing every day in the classroom. We still have work to do to support help some our students; I look forward to working with our staff to find ways of helping those students meet their goals of graduation."
