Prep Football: Encinal Edges Alameda High 45-41

Highlights from the 57th Annual Island Bowl

It was a great display of Alameda athleticism as traditional competitors Alameda High School and Encinal High School squared off in the 57th Annual Island Bowl Friday night 

Encinal was the first to score in the game. Quarterback Andrew Ve'e rushed two yards after only nine plays in the quarter. Alameda came back when #14 Andrew Cooper ran for 30 yards to tie the game. Alameda recovered the ball off an Encinal fumble at the Encinal 43-yard line. Alameda's Zac Alfers caught an almost 50-yard pass from quarterback Antonio Manibusan to take Alameda ahead 14-7.

The second quarter started with a blocked Alameda punt by Encinal's #3 Abraham Hill. Encinal's Austin Ve'e recovered and ran to the Alameda two-yard line. Encinal's Jon Trodder rushed the last two yards to gain the touchdown and tie the game at 14. Alex Amiri of Encinal blocked another punt by Alameda. Isaiah Hunter of Encinal landed on the ball in the end zone for another Encinal touchdown. Alameda's defense held the Jets to a field goal to end the half with Alameda 14, Encinal 24.

Alameda started the second half causing and recovering an Encinal fumble. Alameda's Keelan Doss received and ran 25 yards for an Alameda touchdown. Encinal's Corey Sails rushed eight yards for another Encinal touchdown. Alameda came back quickly with a four-play drive that ended in a 25 yard catch by Alfers to end the third quarter Alameda 28, Encinal 31.

The fourth quarter started with a bang when Encinal was on Alameda's three-yard line. A fight broke out and cost Encinal a 30-yard loss in penalties. Despite the loss of yardage, Encinal's quarterback Ve'e threw a 25-yard pass to #1 Bo Banks. Alameda drove back and their #1 Sulaiman Hameed ran for another touchdown. Encinal fought to keep their lead and quarterback Ve'e ran five yards for a touchdown.

Alameda's Alfers caught a 25-yard pass from Manibusan, putting Alameda within striking distance. Manibusan rushed five yards for another touchdown, but Alameda missed the point after touchdown, leaving Encinal leading by four points.

Encinal was able to hold off Alameda with a final score of Alameda 41, Encinal 45.
