Information submitted by Alameda Unified School District:

Superintendent Kirsten Vital announced today that she will be leaving Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) to take a job as superintendent in the Capistrano Unified School District later this summer.

Vital, who has been with AUSD for more than six years, said “I am excited about this new role. Capistrano is an amazing district and I am honored that its Board has chosen me to implement their vision for the children in Capistrano."

"I have cherished my time here in Alameda," she added, "and am deeply grateful for the support of parents and district employees who do so much for children. We have accomplished a lot in my six years here – I feel I am truly leaving this district a better place and am leaving as a better leader."

Under Vital's leadership, the district created a programmatic Master Plan, benefited from a $12 million parcel tax to offset steep cuts in state funding for schools, implemented innovative new instructional practices, and introduced a strong "Go Green" program. During her tenure, test scores across the district have also risen, as have the number of AP classes and magnet and innovative programs offered. This year alone, Vital oversaw the implementation of the new state funding system for public schools and the new Common Core State Standards, as well as the creation of the district's first Facilities Master Plan.

"I personally thank our Superintendent for her tremendous work and focus on the goal of all our students achieving and exceeding their potential," Margie Sherratt, president of the AUSD Board of Education, said. "The innovative programs developed during her tenure, for example, currently allow Alameda students and families choice in shaping their own education. Ms. Vital’s instructional focus never wavered, and we are a high-achieving District because of her vision. I wish her well and great success in her new educational adventure.”

Superintendent Vital will remain in her position for part of this summer, at which point an interim superintendent will be hired until a permanent superintendent can be found. The Board will discuss next steps at this coming Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.
