Teachers to Vote Next Week on School Calendar for Coming Year

Negotiators for the Alameda Unified School District and the Alameda Education Association reached agreement on schedules for the 2013-2014 school year. The teachers' group will vote to pick one of two alternate calendars next week.

From an Alameda Unified School District announcement:

Alameda, Thursday, January 10, 2013 - Just before the Winter Break negotiating teams representing the District and the Alameda Education Association (AEA) reached an agreement regarding the 2013-14 school calendar.

AEA membership is voting within the next week for one of two agreed-upon possible calendars. (As a reference, please click this link for the PDF file with the two possible calendars.) Following the vote by AEA membership, the Board of Education will ratify the calendar at the Board meeting on January 15, 2013. The District will share the adopted calendar with schools, families and the community as soon as possible after the AEA vote and Board ratification.

Board President Niel Tam expressed hope that the agreement on next year's calendar many months earlier than occurred in 2012-13 will set the stage for continued progress and resolution of negotiations early in 2013:

"We appreciate the efforts to resolve differences reflected in the agreement reached for the 2013-14 calendar. These calendars represent significant compromise on the part of both parties. The Board of Education is pleased to bring this issue to a resolution so that the bargaining teams can focus their attention on the more substantive issues at the bargaining table. We hope to continue this positive momentum to resolve successor negotiations promptly in the New Year."

The agreement on the 2013-14 calendar followed recent, productive bargaining sessions between the parties on this and other issues. Bargaining teams have been meeting regularly since the start of this school year, and will resume regular meetings later this week.

AEA has now passed all of its initial proposals to the District.

The District has also passed its initial proposals with the exception of economic proposals. The parties are set to discuss economic proposals on salary and benefits as well as the District's three year budget later this month after both sides have an opportunity to assess the impact of the Governor's new budget proposal for funding K-12 education.
