Alameda Commuters Golf Tournament

85th ALAMEDA COMMUTERS GOLF set for play!

Almost as long as there has been golf in Alameda, there has been the  "Commuters"!

Since 1927, many golf tournaments have been held in Alameda. The oldest and most important is the Alameda Commuters Golf Tournament.

The first Alameda Commuters was held in July of 1928. By 1936 the tournament grew to a field of 21 handicap flights of 16 players, a total of 352 entries. By 1937, it was necessary to hold qualifying for the Championship flight to determine the low 32, who advanced into match play. That format lasted for 22 years, when in 1959 the Championship became a 72-hole, medal play event as it remains today. The Commuters has had the staying power to survive part of a depression, prohibition, World War II, and more. The strength of the Tournament Committee, sponsors, and the desire of top amateurs to compete have all factored into this longevity.

Over the years the Commuters has become the premiere Amateur golf event in Northern California. With 250 NCGA performance points, the Commuter’s champion always plays a part in the race to see who is Northern California’s top player of the year. This Saturday, 224 of the best amateur golfers in Northern California will tee it up and compete in this prestigious 72-hole event to see who will take home the “Commuters” title.  The entire field will play 36 holes over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd to see who will take home the 36 hole medalist honors and to see who will survive the 36 hole cut of low 50 and ties with those continuing on the following weekend: April 28-29, 2012.

Layfayettes’ Rick Reinsberg will return to defend his 2011 crown. Reinsberg’s 5 titles only rival that of Tal Smith (7) and NCGA great and Alameda favorite son, Bob Blomberg (6).  Also scheduled to play are past champions Travis Taylor (2009) and Darryl Donovan (2000-1). Other outstanding players to watch are: Carlos Briones, Scott Hardy, Nicolo Galleti, 2012 SF City champ Cody Blick, and Alamedean’s Mike Maurice and Michael Schmitz.

Other Alamedean’s in the field include: Blake Yu, Bruce MacLean, Chris Goin, Danny Ro, David Na, Glen VanWinkle, Matt Baiardi, Matthew Hettich,  Sanshiro Kato, Shawn Carrol, Shawn Shelby, and Cal bound Alameda High School senior Carly Childs.
