I'm disappointed that this facility is so unenlightened in 2012 as to be "women-only". Of course, if a man insists on joining, they can't legally refuse him, but a friend of mine reports being told that they would seriously discourage a man, should he inquire. (Let's speculate, for a moment, on the converse situation, where a new "men-only" gym discouraged women members.) I understand the objection many women have to the typical gym scene; I find it rather intimidating myself, and my experience with "typical" gyms has not been encouraging. That's why I was disappointed that Fit-Lite closed, and why I probably will discontinue my "24-Hour Fitness" membership, even tho it's been transferred to the gym on Alameda Av. (I even find the parking lot there intimidating.) But, y'know, women aren't alone in wanting an alternative to that kind of experience. Fit-Lite had women, men, and in particular older folks who wouldn't be comfortable in a large gym, half of whom apparently aren't welcome here, where it's apparently still 1980.

Thank you for your insight in to the gym atmosphere and how it may be intimidating to some. Total Woman Gym and Day Spa saw the need in 1965 to help women feel comfortable in the gym, which in turn has helped thousands and thousands of women get fit and healthy which also raises their self-esteem and personal body-image. The gym is designed for women with equipment more to their size requirements and class preferences, but men may join in accordance with Calif state law on anti-discrimination. I would like to remind you that it has only been very recently that two woman were allowed to join a 'men only' country club (here in the good 'ol USA), and for centuries, women were not welcomed whenever men wanted a place to themselves. I recently spoke with an older woman who remembers not being able to workout in a 'men only' SoCal gym decades ago, and how thrilled she is that there is a comfortable place where she can now go and just be herself. TW will be that 'little slice of heaven' for weary women throughout the area. There are also numerous women of certain nationalities who are restricted from working out anywhere men may be present. As for the closing of FitLite, they came to the end of their lease, and decided not to renew, and as for your personal feelings of gym intimidation, perhaps more walks on the beach and at-home, online exercise programs are the ticket to get you up and moving!

the thing with the "rising membership rates" reminds me of the semi-scams that 24-hour fitness used to pull in the 90s. Just be straight with people. Same rate for everyone.

There's always someone to complain about "Only" establishments. As u stated "they can't legally refuse a man from joining", so join if u want but stop complaining. I'm sure they're "men-only" gyms that discourage women from joining. There's also gyms for Men and Women. So there u go, so many choices. Pick one and stop complaining or start your own gym and call it what ever u want. Sheesh!

Yes, and the very first rate on the postcard I received in the mail - $24.99 already said 'SOLD OUT' Um, I'd like to know when the advertised initially at that rate BEFORE it had sold out. I think it's a scam and that they never did off $24.99. Each new post card they hike up the rates. Don't they realize how sleazy that type of marketing is? The place is small and doesn't even have a pool or jacuzzi so how they could keep hiking the rate up to around $64 a month is beyond ridiculous and not competitive with other health clubs.
