continued to prove itself to be among the top teams in the East Bay with a 57-43 win over Piedmont Wednesday night.

The Pilots dominated the glass and played efficient and mistake-free offense to control the majority of the game.

“We know this team,” St. Joseph coach Julianne Berry said. “They know us. In a game like this, it’s all about effort.”

Piedmont led 18-16 after the first quarter and continued to hang with the Pilots throughout most of the second period. But a couple of late second-quarter 3-pointers gave the Pilots a 33-27 at the half. St. Joe’s continued to control the game in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 44-35 by the end of the period.

Offensively, the Pilots controlled possession and used good ball movement to find open shots. St. Joe’s limited mistakes and capitalized on the opportunities they were given.

“We got really good shots,” Berry said. “We’re an unselfish team — sometimes even too unselfish. We have not just one player, but two, three, or four players who can score, and we work the ball around until someone got a good shot.”

Desiree Harris led the Pilots with 17 points. Jessica De Mesa chipped in 15, making five 3-pointers. Monina Cuyugan added 11 for St. Joe’s.

But one of the keys to the Pilots’ success came on the glass, where center Ashley Wood dominated the rebounding battle.

“We count on her to get us not only defensive rebounds, but offensive rebounds too,” Berry said. “That’s all about effort, and she brought it.”
