U14 Alameda United Select Boys Soccer Team Now 7-0 in League Play Heading into Tough Davis Tournament

Unbeaten and unscored upon since Oct. 9, the U14 United boys worked to build some additional momentum heading into a big travel tournament weekend in Davis, shutting out two league opponents Oct. 22 and 23.

One week before facing some of the best U14 boys soccer teams in Northern  California and Nevada in the annual Davis Legacy Lily Nisen Tournament, Alameda United dispatched two of its weaker league opponents — East Bay United (EBU)-Bay Oaks Sting and Albany-Berkeley Soccer Club (ABSC) Hawks—by a combined score of 19-0.

The two shutouts pushed Alameda’s league-leading record to 7-0 and its even more dominant goals for/against ratio to a remarkable 51/1 — six of its seven league victories have been by shutout, and United has averaged over seven goals per game in its league wins.

Twenty-eight of Alameda’s goals have come against the Hawks, who are practically the mirror image of Alameda — Albany-Berkeley now has an 0-8 league record and a 0/75 goals for/against ratio. They are having a rough season overall, not just against Alameda.

United’s most competitive game of the weekend came against the EBU-Bay Oaks Sting, a contest that was knotted in a scoreless tie at halftime. Playing without the stalwart Vazquez cousins (Saul and Osmar) for the first time since early in the season, Alameda struggled somewhat to generate offense, but held firm on defense.

United showed more offensive spark in the second half, though two of its three goals came on dead-ball plays. Cameron Burns scored on a penalty kick, and Carl Penney launched a remarkable free-kick goal from almost midfield. Prawat Somwongsa scored Alameda’s third goal, on an assist from Jano Heljo.

The U14 United boys return to action in Davis the weekend of Oct. 29-30, facing a Davis Legacy team, the Ross Valley Breakers, and the Sierra Mountain Strikers in tournament competition.
