The Breeders: Where the Moms (and Dads) Are

Get busy making friends while the rest of the people you know are at work.

When I was pregnant, I wondered if I would need to make once I entered the world of diapers and nap times, I didn't consider one very simple factor — scheduling.

While you are on maternity leave, or if you choose/have the option to stay home with your kid, you quickly realize that most of the people you know are not available from nine to five. Not only is it nice to be able to compare notes on sleep deprivation and pediatricians, it is quite simply, necessary for your mental health to get out of the house.

I've made it a goal to get out once a day and once again, this is another reason why I love Alameda. There are a ton of ways to get your kid out and meet folks beyond just walking down Park Street.

from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday. It's an informal gathering in the back of the store. You can't miss the gaggle of strollers parked along the back wall.

Some of the mom's from the Tot Tank group have also started an even more informal gathering at on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., so both sides of the Island are covered.

(formerly Alameda New Parent Support) has also been re-formed by members of the former group. This a more structured group with six Friday morning meetings in a series for $150. Their first series begins tomorrow.

And for those of us who have gone, or will be going back to work, never fear. A friend of mine started a virtual group, Bay Area Mommy, on Facebook. It started as a place to share resources and ask questions, but now has a monthly meet-up on Saturdays. The next one is Oct. 1 in Lincoln Park at 1 p.m. If you'd like to join just let me know. We're up to 83 members and are always welcoming more!

Are there other groups meeting aound town? What about groups that include, or are just for, dads?
