Founded in 1989, the name Midway was chosen to identify that turn around point in the lives of women and children where the cycle of homelessness and domestic violence is broken and replaced with a planned recovery process.
The Alameda Homeless Network is a non-profit organization responsible for the Midway Shelter property. The Network partners with Building Futures with Women and Children, and together they operate the Midway Shelter. The Network raises a significant amount of private funds to keep the Midway Shelter operating.
The mission of the Alameda Homeless Network is to advocate for homeless women and their children, assuring their right to live free of domestic violence in a safe and supportive environment. The Network strives to secure adequate funding to keep the Midway Shelter operating 24 hours a day while raising the consciousness of our community.
Building Futures with Woman and Children operates and manages the shelter, including securing public funding for the shelter and managing staff, operations, support services, and providing domestic violence outreach services to residents and the community.
