Can a women’s sexual attractiveness and body image be altered by exercise?
YES! Ongoing research continues to show that adding regular exercise can indeed be the answer to quickly raising low self-esteem and/or enhancing a woman’s strained body image. Women with poor body image can suffer from diminished self-esteem, making it difficult to feel desirable or sexually attractive. Research shows that regular exercise works wonders for improving health, easing stress and making physical encounters more satisfying, but few realize the significant impact getting 'in shape' has on overall self-image.
Since body image doesn’t have a consistent meaning for everyone, it’s difficult to pinpoint the variables that may affect how one perceives her body. The volume of self-image a woman has can be summed up, though, by looking at:
- how she feels about how she looks
- how she views herself
- how she thinks others see her
- how she actually feels about her body
According to New York City Psychologist Karen Zager, Ph.D., women with healthy body images are more likely to enjoy enhanced sexual activity. "If you feel good about yourself, you are in a better position to feel good about relationships, including your sex life." In other words, exercise is good medicine for body image and lovemaking.
Positive results from exercise occur in as little as six weeks, and may act as a catalyst toward helping women feel better about themselves--especially when the goal is to increase sexual attraction. "Men and women who exercise regularly are going to have increased levels of desire," says Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., ACE's chief exercise physiologist. "They're going to have enhanced confidence, and greater sexual satisfaction." Although exercise is not the panacea to all sexual ills, it is certainly a great place to start for exhilarating intimate benefits.
Exercise also increases vascularization; an exercise-related adaptation when networks of blood vessels open to create new routes for carrying blood through all active body structures. Simply put, exercise helps the body pump and circulate blood more efficiency to the parts that matter most during lovemaking.
