Remember – Bay Bridge Closes Wednesday Night

If you want to go across San Francisco Bay anytime between this Wednesday night, Aug. 28, and the following Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, you'll have to find some other way besides the Bay Bridge. It'll be closed.

Traveling across the Bay will get a lot harder beginning Wednesday night when the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge will shut down forever. Its replacement – the new eastern span – isn't scheduled to open until the following Tuesday morning, Sept. 3.

That means no driving across the Bay Bridge for more than five days, including the long Labor Day weekend.

BART will run hourly trains all night during the closure from 14 stations, including Downtown Berkeley, El Cerrito del Norte and MacArthur. The San Francisco Bay Ferry is boosting service from Alameda, Oakland, Vallejo and Harbor Bay.

Transit officials says heavier traffic can be expected on the Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo bridges.

The old Bay Bridge is scheduled to shut down at 8 p.m. on Aug. 28, more than 84 years after first opening for business on Nov. 12, 1936, half a year ahead of its more famous sister, the Golden Gate Bridge.

The KCBS and CBS 5 website has a "Bay Bridge Closure Survival Guide" with information about transportation options.
