Celebrating Compost? It Has Its Own Kid-Friendly Event Saturday

The day will include children's activities, music, workshops, help with landscape design and a marketplae.

If compost seems like an unlikely focus for an all-day, family friendly event — think again.

CompostCon is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m in the Est Hall of the Oakland Convention Center, 550 Tenth St., Oakland.

The event organizers say CompostCon offers a chance to learn about eco-friendly landscaping, gardening with compost and water conservation with mulch.

The day's schedule includes gardening and composting workshops, help with landscape design, children's activities, resources for teachers, planting demonstrations, ask-the-expert tables, music and a marketplace.

Admission is free for students and teachers with ID and for those who wear a compost, gardening or food-related costume. Otherwise, a $5 donation is suggested — you'll receive five raffle tickets in exchange.

The event is being presented by the U.S. Composting Council, City of San Jose, California Chapter of U.S. Composting Council and California Organic Recycling Council (CORC).
