Legislators and Labor Put Aside Politics to Play a Different Game

Local Assemblymember Rob Bonta takes to the soccer field this weekend in a fundraiser match.

Local politicians are taking on organized labor in an unlikely arena for both lawmakers and union bosses. Congressman Eric Swalwell and Assemblyman Rob Bonta are leading a team that will face “the East Bay...labor community’s best soccer players” at a charity match in Alameda Saturday afternoon.

The $75 ticket not only offers voters the rare opportunity to assess the athleticism of local pols, but also the chance to drink beer from Linden Street Brewery and eat teamster-cooked BBQ while supporting a job training center in West Oakland.

A press release for the event promises that Saturday’s game is the first annual soccer match aimed at raising money for the Cypress Mandela Training Center.
