What Should Go Here? Former Alameda Golfworks

Alameda Golfworks moved to their new location on March 2nd leaving their old location available for a new business.  What do you think should go here?

This spot is located at 1110 Lincoln Avenue next to Pagano’s Hardware.  Owner, Shawn Shelby, opened this store 5 years ago and they’ve been doing really well.  They outgrew this 900 square foot space and moved to their new location at 1731 Clement Ave.

Their new space has over 6000 square feet and is located at 1731 Clement Ave.  With the additional space they’ve been able to add new product lines and offer golf lessons.  However, the new location is in more of an industrial area with a less foot traffic where the previous location was in a higher foot traffic area next to other shops and restaurants.  

I asked the person at the store if the lack of foot traffic has hurt their business, but he says most of their customers learned of them through word of mouth.  Owner, Shawn Shelby, grew up in Alameda and many people in the local golf community know him and his store so the lack of foot traffic hasn’t hurt their business.  Shawn has been working in the golf industry for more than 13 years in shops like Golfsmith, Alameda Golf Shop, and other pro shops.  In his bio it says his goal is to provide “unmatched service to Bay Area golfers.”  Judging by their Yelp reviews of 5 stars, it looks like they’re doing a great job.

It’s great to see someone who’s been working in the industry, who’s passionate about what they do, take the leap and open their own business.  At the end of the day, this is the mission of Spotmojo.  We want to help people like Shawn Shelby take the leap, but give them enough information so they have better chances of being successful.  And we think the best information is to simply ask people directly, “What do you want?”

Perhaps there’s someone out there that’s always dreamt of opening their own business. And perhaps they can start up in Alameda Golfworks’ previous location.
