This hospital was founded as the Alameda Sanatorium in 1894 by registered nurse Kate Creedon who converted a small house into a six-bed facility. By 1901 the hospital had its own three-story building and included a nursing school. In 1925, an even bigger building was built at the hopital's current location on the corner of Willow Street and Clinton Avenue, and today's Alameda Hospital is a general acute care institution providing emergency care as well as a wide range of acute and post-acute in- and out- patient services. In 2002, with Alameda Hospital struggling financially, Alameda voters approved the creation of the City of Alameda Health Care District, which collects and oversees the use of an annual parcel tax of $298 to support the services of the Alameda Hospital.
