Professionally trained chef Wendy Shay now has a breakfast/lunch cafe located next door to her catering business, Herbs and Spices. The menu at Shay's appears simple--soups, salads, sandwiches, light breakfast--but the flavors are sophisticated. And everything is made from scratch--from the healthy California cuisine to the meaty east coast subs.

There are gluten-free breads and dairy-free options; quinoa salad is a menu regular. The cooks are happy to meet dietary restrictions.

Shay's is especially child friendly. There's a kid's menu, an arcade game and toddler toys. Alternate Fridays, Cowboy Jared sings to the preschool set.

Though new in town, Shay's has already been voted Best Soup, Best Caterer and Best Kept Secret for 2010 by Alameda Magazine.

Shay's serves beer and wine.
