City Attorney Responds to Mom's Allegations

Alameda City Attorney Janet Kern provided a statement Wednesday addressing concerns raised in a May 11 letter to the editor from Tammy Sorenson, whose 13-year-old son Brandon was killed in a traffic accident one year ago, on May 16, 2011

Alameda City Attorney Janet Kern provided Alameda Patch with the following statement today, May 16. (You may read Tammy Sorenson's letter here.) This past week a letter from Mrs. Tammy Sorensen, the mother of a child killed in  an automobile/bicycle collision, was published by a number of Alameda media  outlets. Mrs. Sorensen expressed a number of complaints about how she felt the Alameda Police Department handled the situation. Let me say on behalf ofthe City that the passing of Brandon Sorensen was tragic  and our hearts go out to the family. The loss of a child is truly terrible for a family and for a community. The Sorensen family has retained legal counsel and filed claims against the City.  As a result, the City is restricted in what…

Police Log: A Bad Week for Burglars

Incidents of interest from the Alameda Police Department log, May 10-14: home burglaries and attempted burglaries, argument about dogs, DUI arrest, auto theft.

Would-be burglars fled from ringing alarm systems and screaming victims in a series of recent break-in attempts, according to the Alameda Police Department. The bad week for the bad guys started the morning of May 10, when two burglars removed a window screen and opened a window at a Dayton Avenue home, setting off a security alarm, said Alameda Police Lt. Ted Horlbeck. A witness said the pair were "very small" and wearing hoodies, and took off when the alarm sounded. The following day, someone tried but failed to enter an apartment in the 1100 block of Regent Street via two windows. That evening, May 11, a burglar pried open a rear sliding glass door at an apartment in the 500 block of Buena Vista Avenue and picked up a laptop computer. …

Same Time, Next Year: Return to Little River

Changing times in Mendocino

When I was a college student at Cal in 1978, my fiancé-now-husband, Si, and I went to see the movie Same Time, Next Year, filmed at the Heritage House on the rugged coast just south of Mendocino. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn play an adulterous couple who spend one clandestine weekend together every year, then return to their spouses and everyday lives. As the seasons, years, and decades go by, they grow old in each other’s arms. If infidelity doesn’t hurt your stomach, it’s a great romance in a breathtaking setting. As I blew my sniveling 19-year-old nose leaving the movie theater, I decided that Mendocino was the perfect place for our honeymoon. Then I called and nearly choked when I found out how much Heritage House charged to stay for a …

I respectfully refer you to the comment left by Stephanie Fisher in the comments section ot the original article. We're not talking about a press release or some political mumbo-jumbo. It's about a family, proud of their son, hoping that the leaders of a town with such rich military history would reach out and acknowledge his contibution and memory. As of Sunday, May 13, only the AFD had reached …   more ›

The Conflict Between Teachers, AUSD Superintendent

Website posting of grievances filed with the Alameda Unified School District have made parts of the discord very public

A long-simmering conflict between the local teachers' union (the Alameda Education Association, or AEA) and Alameda Unified School District Superintendent Kirsten Vital has focused, in part, on how AUSD evaluates — or disciplines — its teaching staff. AEA leaders say the evaluation process has changed substantially, and for the worse, since Vital took over the superintendent's post. They hope to include more protection for teachers in any new labor contract. Vital, meanwhile, says the district has increased its support for teachers' professional development under her leadership. That conflict took a very public turn recently when the AUSD posted on its website a summary of grievances filed by the AEA this year, many of them on behalf of …

The Swarm: How a Beekeeper Rounds 'Em Up

This photo essay originally appeared on San Leandro Patch. With the growing popularity of beekeeping on the Island, we thought readers of Alameda Patch would enjoy it.

Spring is the season when bee colonies divide and propagate, and this photo essay describes the sighting and relocation of one swarm that inhabited a tree near Roosevelt Elementary School in San Leandro on one afternoon just as grades 1 through 3 were letting out. Self-taught beekeeper and Roosevelt mom Mitch Huitema is the woman who went up into the tree to coax this colony out of the tree. Her husband, Tim Holmes, owner of Zocalo Coffeehouse in San Leandro, took the pictures. Here's what happened. Mitch said she was driving up to the school one afternoon when she saw a mass of bees fly across Dowling Street and swarm into one of the pine trees. She surmised that this was a colony in search of a new home. As she explained, when colonies …
