I am not sure if it is physically possible, musically possible, ethically possible, or evenRead More theoretically possible for a middle school band to exist, without Mr. Dan Dooha-Chambers.

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! Yes, you are right. I would love to share the happy memories, for example, from Edison school'sRead More Halloween parade, carnival games, joint fair at the Bridge Festival, and events in the multi-cultural room. But I am not sure how it is possible to share my 50 MB tiff files, since they are too large to be transmitted by e-mail. --Tom

Fantastic and well deserved! This is coming from a parent of one of Mr. Lamb's student's. Back toRead More School night my husband and I were quite impressed with his presentation and as the year is now nearly over, we are amazed at his unwavering dedication to his students. This guy goes above and beyond. With years of education between my husband and me with college and graduate school, neither of us have experienced a teacher as wonderful as Mr. Lamb. Lucky our kid got him for math this year!!!

Makes sense. As long as we keep eroding and buffering the standards , our Politicians and SchoolRead More Boards will one day have a 100% Graduation Certificate to hang on their "I Love Me" walls!! Truth is , we as a nation spend more money per student than any other Nation in the world on primary education only to have our "graduates" rank 14th in the world......right behind Iceland. So before we run around the building and shake hands with ourselves, maybe we should take a moment to ponder some new innovations in education and stop throwing money into an endless pit!

JSanders... why don't you explain what you think "Destined for Greatness" means to you? IfRead More you have watched the news and seen the interviews with many of his fellow students and coaches, it seems as though this young man had an upbeat and inspiring personality that affected those around him in a positive way. In my book that is greatness. To be a person who brings out the best in others is truly rare. I imagine my definition of greatness is likely different than yours, simply because there is not much that I have ever agreed with you when I see your postings on this site. The negative comments that I read sadden me, and even more so the number of recommendations following those comments. It says a lot about the negativity either of this community or the followers on this website. Pearson Lyverse gave a personal perspective which I certainly appreciated, why do you need to refer to it as a "rant." It is simply disrespectful. The REAL topic here is a life lost too soon.

I would still like to hear JSanders definition of "Greatness." He seems to have the needRead More to diminish the perspective of those who actually knew him.

Why didn't AUSD staff offer the currently vacant campus on Eagle/Everett as an option? It has aRead More larger footprint than the City's Main Library and thus represents a viable option for AUSD's current facility and program innovation needs. Last spring the BOE voted/approved 120k for the removal of school's decrepit/unusable portables (citing "safety and aesthetic purposes") and also voted to include it within AUSD's Facilities Master Planning Process. So why aren't the BOE and AUSD administrators talking about it? How will a bond measure pass in November if they aren't being forthright with us now?
Kristen H. January 25, 2014 at 01:22 pm
@Laura, I guess you haven't been by the corner of Eagle and Everett lately. That dilapidated campusRead More was razed a year ago. I heard the district wants to sell the land for housing, and why not. The location there is excellent and AUSD needs the $$. It would *really* be nice if AUSD could take the long view-- playing musical chairs with the charter schools every year just causes upheaval and is not a long term solution. Like them or not, the charter schools are here to stay, so work with them.
Laura Bryon January 25, 2014 at 02:53 pm
Hi Kristen, yes I have seen it and yes, as I mentioned, the portables (the only type of buildingsRead More that were existing on the campus since put there in the 70s) were removed last spring. However whether the district wants to sell it for housing or not is exactly my point. And sell it why not, you ask? Exactly because our district is embarking on a thorough Facility Master Plan to ultimately match all sites with all programs, short and long term. And fyi, the Eagle/Everett campus wasn't included in the Superintendent's proposed plan, but a majority of our BOE requested it and voted/approved to include that specific campus in the district's final plan on facilities. And just so you know, that BOE's majority vote (thank you, McMahon, Sherratt and Spencer) also demanded that the plan includes 1) the facility needs of AUSD charter schools, 2) the facility needs of district offices, and 3) the unused campus at Singleton Ave (formerly Miller School). Of course "AUSD needs $$." But currently AUSD is focused on completing a thorough inventory of what we have in order to be able to create what each of us all want: an awesome public school district complete with innovative options for k-12 education and Adult School. So regarding how the BOE and how the Superintendent "works" with charter schools in AUSD, I would suggest searching BOE agendas on the district's website and then watch video clips from a variety of BOE meetings in order to really see each person's long/short view on education, on charter schools, and so much more.
