Coachbeth, what a joke - I asked my question in jest. Rowing is a sport for the elite, and that is…Read More perfectly ok. There is no need to be inclusionary in all activities. Should caviar tasting clubs or Porsche owner clubs also have scholarship for low income kids? How ridiculous would that be. Everybody is so brainwashed by the socialists in California that we keep having these ridiculous policies that end up hurting the low income more than helping them.
Steven Johnson, President Oakland Strokes May 13, 2013 at 01:47 pm
As Coach Beth said so well, we underwrite a very substantial scholarship fund that is available to…Read More to all our families that need financial assistance. We recognize that rowing is an expensive sport, and we want to make certain that all kids that are truly interested in participating can do so, regardless of financial ability.. As President of Oakland Strokes, I can assure you that we are an open and welcoming organization that is very proud of our record of inclusion.,

Rick Eymer made a "bush league" grammatical error that should have been caught. See…Read More paragraph 2:
"Since signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1981, Melvin HAS RODE a roller coaster of success and failure."
Even a sports reporter should know better than this.....

Bob Melvin is the best thing to happen to the A's in MANY years! Love him and the team! How…Read More appropriate it is that the team's "Root Beer Float Day" every year benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation! Most important of all: KEEP THE A'S IN OAKLAND!!!

Go Artemis! We are so fortunate to have one of the best sports, taught by some of the finest…Read More coaches, and enjoyed by the most wonderful rowers imaginable. Come down to JLAC and witness for yourself the beaming smiles and camaraderie on every face as the carry the boats back to the boathouse and begin the process of washing and stowing the equipment. These are healthy, active children in every sense-mind and body! And what follows a happy child? An EQUALLY happy parent (or two!)! Thanks, Artemis Rowing for creating this wonderful little "world" for us, where fitness and happiness come so easily!

There is a conversation beginning about starting an inclusive Cub and Older boy Scouting Group. I…Read More have been doing some research and there is an inclusive scouting group that began in England and now has troops here in the U.S. There is no troop in our area but there are a few in CA. Check out the web site: at http://bpsa-us.org/ We are also looking into Campfire Boys and Girls. If you have interest in being part of this discussion about starting an alternative scouting program that is inclusive, please email me at revlaura@fccalameda.org

LOS ANGELES — The thousands of men expelled from the Boy Scouts of America between 1970 and…Read More 1991 on suspicion of molesting children came from all walks of life — teachers and plumbers, doctors and bus drivers, politicians and policemen. They ranged in age from teens to senior citizens and came from troops in every state, according to a trove of dossiers due for public release Thursday.
While 1,900 previously confidential files suggest no single predator profile, scrutiny of the files reveals a pattern: Many suspected molesters engaged in what psychologists today call “grooming behavior,” a gradual seduction in which predators lavish children with attention, favors and gifts.
In hundreds of cases, Scout leaders allowed the boys to drive cars, drink alcohol or look at pornography. They gradually tested physical boundaries during skinny dipping, group showers, sleepovers and one-on-one activities.
Hundreds of files from the 1960s to the 1980s are set to be released Thursday by order of the Oregon Supreme Court, giving the public its first broad view of the documents.
The dossiers viewed in advance by the Los Angeles Times include biographical data, legal records, Scouting correspondence, boys’ accounts of alleged abuse and media reports and represent all the surviving files kept by the Scouts as of January 2005.
The Scouts have destroyed an unknown number of files over the years.

This would be another reason to clean up the old Naval base to entice and attract sailing teams to…Read More lease space and ports. To bad our City Officials have failed three times to bring revenue to our island. Yet they brought shame, and distrust to our city and make Alameda a public spectacle.

I agree with Mike Martin. The Raiders seem to think the community owes the something vs. the Raiders…Read More reaching out to the community. They have turned a blind eye to the rude and aggressive behavior of many of their fans. We used to go to all of the home games, but stopped, once my kids reached an age where they understood what the words meant, that were being used by a lot of fans there. The Raiders need to get rid of the "Commitment to Excellence: theme and work on simply being decent.
Mike Martin February 14, 2013 at 03:34 pm
The problem with Raiders games are the fans are rough, rude, usually drinking, and it's not a family…Read More friendly event. I understand that the Black Hole has this reputation and the team certainly doesn't want to alienate these die-hard fans. But perhaps the upper deck (where these cheap seats are) could be turned into a more family friendly zone. Games for kids on the plazas behind/under the seats, food offerings that have more kid-friendly variety like pizza, pb&j, milk, and then a strict two-beer limit or something like that. The Raiders have an opportunity to build not only more fans who have less money, but fans who could now afford to bring the kids too and therefore build the next generation of fans.

Palomar,
Well said comment!
There should have been an early pass-interference call on the 49ers as…Read More well.
If the refs had been making calls in the early game, players would have had to play by the rules throughout. Instead they let there be numerous late whistles and late hits (where one guy had the runner stopped with a tackle and then other guys were allowed to hit him--very physically dangerous and with game-changing possibilities of injuries and fumbles) and also over aggressive shoving/fighting after the point (mostly started by the Ravens).
I thought the officiating was poor and changed the nature of the game.
Wasn't this almost the fewest penalty calls that these teams have EVER had? (I'd like to hear those statistics.) Did these teams change that much from their previous season play that they now weren't doing penalties? I doubt it.

The game was very entertaining for fans of both teams. That is why you watch. The 49ers played like…Read More a young team. Flashes of brilliance and moments of stupidity. The non-calls by the refs changed the ebb and flow. Their performance was pathetic and that is supposed to be the 'best' ref crew the NFL has to offer. Bad calls and non-calls never even out. I expect to see the game played by the rules.
I am not sure what the ultimate outcome would have been if it was properly officiated but it most definitely would not have been the same game I watched. What a disgraceful display by the NFL on their biggest stage.

My wish is that some (ok, a lot) of the commercialization be taken out of the superbowl. It can be…Read More sickening. Too many time outs; long ones that can mess up momentum. I am very impressed with Jim Harbaugh's coaching. With the exception of the Seattle game, he was pretty awesome this year.
Jack Rux January 24, 2013 at 04:04 pm
Thanks Kristofer. I have feeling this will be a really good Super Bowl. The key is for the players…Read More of both teams not to get caught up in all the hoopla. A line from one of my favorite country songs "Come From the Heart" sums up what's needed: "You gotta dance like nobody's watching." Even if you there are billions. And I think the 49ers will do that enough to win.
