Rev. Laura Rose has been the senior pastor of First Congregational Church www.fccalameda.org at the corner of Central and Chestnut for the past seven years. She has been an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ www.ucc.org for ten years and served as an associate minister in Santa Cruz prior to coming to Alameda.

For six years, Laura has served as co-chair of the Alameda Ministerial Association and currently serves on the steering committee for C.A.R.E. (Community Alliance Resource for Education) www.alamedacare.org a grassroots community group committed to making sure our public schools are safe for all students. As part of her work with C.A.R.E., Laura organized "Faith Communities: Coming Out, Coming Together" an interfaith parade and rally which brought together Alamedans from various faith traditions in support of the LGBT community.

Laura is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y, a product of the "melting pot" and celebrates her savory Italian Catholic and Eastern European Jewish stock. Even though she has called Alameda her hometown for the past eight years, Laura still can't believe she lives on an island with palm trees, a beach and an incredible view of the San Francisco Bay. She and her spouse spend much of their free time chasing after their three-year-old son who not only keeps them hopping and skipping, but full of joy and gratitude for the amazing gift of seeing life through the eyes of a child.

Whenever she has free time, Laura loves to walk by the bay, read about current events and cultural trends, take creative photographs, go to petting zoos, water the plants in her garden and attend local theater productions. One of her weekly rituals is to open the Pink Section of the Chronicle in pursuit of the latest art exhibit, play or movie that is a must see.

Laura is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University. She has a Master of Divinity and Certificate in Spiritual Direction from San Francisco Theological Seminary, a Master of Christian Studies from New College Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in Public Communications from Syracuse University.

Before becoming a minister, she worked as a case manager with homeless families in San Francisco and spent eight years living in the Mission District and volunteering with organizations serving the Central American refugee community. She has also worked in Manhattan and San Francisco doing editorial and public relations work for non-profits.

Laura looks forward to offering her perspectives on faith and life with the hope of digging beneath the surface of things and finding the common (and sacred) ground that can connect and unite us as human beings who share the little patch of earth we call Alameda.
