Alameda City Hall in Gingerbread

Each year my daughter, Emma, 7, and I keep our gingerbread project in mind as we bike our way around town.

We see a building and think "this would be a great gingerbread house."

In 2009, we made a replica of the Alameda Free Library. On a lark, I decided to ask them if we could display it at the Children's Reference Desk. They were thrilled and so began our ongoing project.

In 2010, we constructed the Alameda Movie Theatre in gingerbread, and it was displayed in the lobby for the holiday season.

In 2011, our replica of City Hall created new challenges, from a rounded wall in the back of the building, to the complex roofline which required lots of construction help from my husband, James.

Baking a piece at a time over the past few weeks, we've enjoyed the wonderful aroma of fresh gingerbread, dinnertime discussions of various design details, and even started thinking about next year's project.

Our handiwork will be on display in the main lobby of Alameda City Hall until the Thursday before Christmas.
