Chihuahua Express Airlifts Adoptable Small Dogs from Alameda to Idaho

Bay Area animal shelters — including Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter — have more abandoned small dogs than they can find new homes for.

Thirty small dogs from the Alameda and Berkeley animal shelters headed for new homes in Idaho Monday aboard the "Chihuahua Express," according to Mim Carlson, executive director of the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

Carlson said FAAS and Berkeley Animal Services had more small dogs — mostly Chihuahuas  — than people wanting to adopt them. Ten Alameda dogs and about 20 pooches from Berkeley were sent by air to the Idaho Humane Society in Boise.

"It's really hard to say good-bye to our 10 little dogs but we know they have a much better chance of finding new homes in Boise where there is a big demand for Chihuahuas," Carlson said.

"We wish all of them a joy-filled life in their new homes."

Wings of Rescue provided transportation Monday from the Livermore Airport.

Carlson said Providence Veterinary Hospital, Alameda Pet Hospital and Park Centre Animal Hospital, all in Alameda, paid the flight fees for the FAAS dogs.

Pet Food Express donated crates for the Berkeley dogs, while volunteers provided transport to the Livermore airport.
