Alameda Police Join Search for Missing Girl

Updated Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1:50 p.m.

The parents of missing St. Joseph Notre Dame High School sophomore Elisabeth Griffith, 15, met with Alameda police this morning (Wednesday), according to the girl's mother, Janet Griffith.

"The Alameda Police Department knocks our socks off," Griffith said.

"Sgt. [Tony] Munoz had already briefed officers before we got there, and they have pictures of Elisabeth."

According to APD Capt. Joe McNiff, Alameda officers have been in contact with Elisabeth's boyfriend and his family, who have moved from the Esperanza housing complex in the West End to a location outside Alameda.

McNiff said Alameda police had also had several phone contacts with Elisabeth's parents before this morning's meeting.

He said the APD is assisting Oakland police with the case.

Elisabeth, who lives in Oakland's Rockridge neighbrhood, was reported missing to the Oakland Police Department when she failed to return home from an after-school shopping trip to South Shore Center on Friday, Sept. 13, her mother said.

She said Elisabeth attended classes at St. Joseph's that day, then went to South Shore with friends.

Elisabeth and other members of the group returned to the St. Joseph's campus when an expected ride home from South Shore failed to materialize, Griffith said. Elisabeth was last seen about 6 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's, she said.

Since then, the family has posted flyers in Alameda's West End, has listed her as missing with 1-800-RUNAWAY and has posted messages for their daughter on Elisabeth's Facebook page, Griffith said.

She said the family has received one report of someone wearing clothing similar to what Elisabeth was wearing the day she vanished.

That report placed Elisabeth at Third and Brush streets in Alameda, near the Esperanza housing complex, she said.

Alameda police said that sighting has not been confirmed.

Griffith said her daughter had been gone overnight one time before without notifying her family, but returned home early the next morning.

Elisabeth's father, Mike Griffith, earlier told the Contra Costa Times that his daughter suffers from depression and that she has disappeared for a few hours at a time before, but never for this long.

Elisabeth is described as Latina, 5'2" tall and weighing about 140 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black sleeveless Ramones T-shirt and patterned black-and-white leggings.

Anyone with information on Elisabeth's whereabouts is asked to call Alameda police at the non-emergency number, (510) 337-8340, or the Oakland Police Department at its non-emergency number, (510) 777-3333.
