Furnace Fire Damages Bay Street Victorian

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported shortly after noon on Tuesday.

A floor furnace touched off a fire this afternoon (Tuesday) that caused about $7,000 damage to a Victorian home in the 1700 block of Bay Street, fire officials said.

The Alameda Fire Department responded at 12:09 pm. to a report of smoke coming from the house, according to an AFD press release.

Firefighters found fire coming from a ground-story floor furnace of the two-story building, with smoke throughout the house, the release said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and searched the house, which was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, it said. The fire was brought under control at 12:25 p.m.

Fire damage was limited to the floor furnace, surrounding flooring and nearby combustible items, with smoke damage throughout the home. A total of 19 firefighters responded.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and its origin was the floor furnace.

Fire and smoke damage is estimated at $7,000 to the building and its contents.
