Update: Hit-and-Run Blitz Damages 8 Vehicles in East End

The driver of a Dodge Ram pickup hit several parked cars on Fernside Boulevard and nearby streets late Monday afternoon. Police say the driver has been cited for several misdemeanor violations and given a court date.

Updated Sept. 11 with information on the drivers arrest / citations.

The driver of a Dodge Ram truck cut a swathe of damage through the East End late Monday afternoon as he careened along Fernside Bouevard and nearby streets, witnesses said.

Eight parked vehicles — two on Fernside, the rest on Windsor Drive — were damaged in the incident, according to an Alameda Police Department spokesperson.

Lt. Jill Ottaviano said the driver of the truck, a male, was admitted to a local hospital after he complained of pain following the incident.

No other injuries were reported, she said.

According to Lt. Don Owyang, a patrol commander with the APD, "The driver was arrested at the scene of the final collision.

"Being that all of his charges were misdemeanors and he had valid identification, in lieu of being booked into jail, he was eligible to be cited out to appear in court on those charges."

Owyang said the driver was not in police custody as of Tuesday but had received a court date.

Police have not yet released the driver's name.

The Dodge truck was damaged and traveling on three wheels by the end of the incident, Ottaviano said.

Witnesses said the driver made one and a half circles around the block after the first collision, traveling on Fernside and on Cambridge, Windsor and Harvard drives. He stopped after hitting several vehicles on Windsor, they said.

Ottaviano said some of the damages on Windsor were secondary — the truck driver hit parked cars that were pushed into more vehicles parked in driveways.

Police received the first call about the incident at 5:40 p.m. Monday, Ottaviano said.
