Owner Of Bonfare Market Reacts To Shooting

Subhead

Updated 5:50 pm

Bonfare Market slowly returned to normal Friday morning after an off-duty deputy with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department fatally shot a gunman during an attempted robbery at 11 pm Thursday night.

While police search for a second robber, Kee Cheng, owner of the market at 1505 High Street, expressed shock at the shooting, the first time in 30 years that a gun was fired in the store.

Alameda police said today they may have located a gunman who was involved in an attempted robbery gone bad that led an off-duty Alameda County sheriff's deputy to shoot him and fatally shoot his accomplice at a convenience store Thursday night.

Alameda police Capt. David Boersma said authorities are waiting to talk to a man who arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds shortly after the shooting inside the Bonfare Market at 1505 High St. in Alameda at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The man's explanation to hospital personnel about how he suffered his gunshot wounds did not make sense, Boersma said.

The man's wounds are not life-threatening and police will talk to him as soon as doctors finish treating him, Boersma said.

Alameda police said officers went to the Bonfare Market on Thursday night after they received 911 calls reporting an armed robbery i progress and shots fired.

Boersma said the sheriff's deputy happened to be at the store when two masked suspects came into the store and a confrontation ensued.

Police said the deputy feared for his safety and the safety of the store's employees so he shot both suspects.

One of the suspects was killed while the second fled the area.

Neither the store employees nor the deputy were injured, police said.

Authorities have tentatively identified the suspect who was killed but will not release his name until it is confirmed by the Alameda County coroner's bureau, Boersma said.
