Ethical Fashion Show tickets now for sale!

Hello Alameda! My name is Katherine (Kasia) Metkowski, or as other people know me, Thrift-shop Girl. After months of promoting and planning, I am proud to announce that the Ethical Fashion Show is finally happening at South Shore Center on June 22nd, 6-8 PM (doors open at 5:45). Tickets sell for only $10 until June 1st. Then, prices jump to $15 and after that, tickets sell for $20 at the door. Revenue from ticket sales will be divided to benefit Girls Inc. and ASTI high school; funds will also be saved to pay for next year’s Fashion Show.

The Ethical Fashion show will be a fun-filled evening geared towards all ages. The Fashion Show will feature works of teenage designers and celebrate their decision to create beautiful outfits using only recycled materials. Notable names from the San Francisco fashion industry will be judging the designs, including Charleston Pierce, celebrity designer and model coach; Christopher Collins, a designer from Project Runway season 8; and and Margaret Mitchell, Founder of Epi Center Med Spa. In addition to the Fashion Show, there will be live music from the local band Coffee Shop Dropouts and catering from Havana’s Cuban Cuisine.

Making the show a possibility has been a major achievement for me. I have been working on this for almost half a year by now; since that time, I have had to do a lot of growing up and breaking out of my comfort zone. Half a year ago, I never thought that I would be bold enough to speak publicly in front of groups of youth and adults, or have the leadership skills to organize people to put up posters and call contestants, or have the diligence to see a project through from beginning to finish. Inspired by all the activity from the past few months, I decided to create a student-led group, called BeyondWant, which will educate other youth about conscious consumerism and be in charge of creating an Ethical Fashion Show every year.

I would like to thank Girls Inc. of the Island City and Jessica Jane Robinson, aka Miss Alameda, for guiding me along this journey. Thank you also NCRA (the Northern California Recycling Association) for believing in me and funding the project, as well as Ashli and Jessica Chen, Bianca Hsueh, Peter Lung, and Susan Peevy for becoming the first BeyondWant team. Huge shout out to South Shore Center, Island Print Express, Havana’s, and the City of Alameda for sponsoring me. In conclusion, if you are free June 22nd, please consider purchasing tickets for yourself and your family. Your support and belief in me has, does, and will mean the world to me. By purchasing tickets, you not only support my high school and Girls Inc. of the Island City, you prove to my peers and I that anyone can make a difference, even if you are still only in high school.
