Police Log: Sugar in a Gas Tank, Police Pursuit of Fleeing Shoplifter

Plus plenty of stolen bikes and cars — and television sets.

Incidents highlighted here were recorded in the Alameda Police Department log Nov. 12-13. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

TUESDAY, NOV. 12

Auto burglaries and thefts from vehicles — Someone siphoned gas from a vehicle parked in the 2100 block of Otis Drive. A thief broke a window of a vehicle in the 400 block of Haight Avenue and stole personal items. In the 1400 block of Park Street, someone forced open the door of a parked vehicle and stole a stereo and speakers about 11:30 p.m.

Auto thefts — Vehicles were reported stolen from the 3200 block of Fernside Boulevard, the 1900 block of Everett Street (a work truck) and the 800 block of Taylor Avenue.

Grand theft — Televisions were stolen from three rooms in the Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham hotel at 1628 Webster St.

Grand theft/shoplifting — Thirty video games were stolen from the Target store at 2700 Fifth St. For a security camera photo of the suspect, see "Police: Do You Know This Shoplifting Suspect?"

Robberies — Strong-arm robberies were reported on Eagle Avenue and Central Avenue. For details, see "Two Days, Three Robberies — Thieves Get Big Haul in Stolen Cigarettes."

Bike theft — Someone stole an unlocked bicycle while the cyclist was briefly inside a business in the 600 block of Central Avenue about 6:40 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 13

DUI arrests — A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated at 12:48 a.m. near the corner of Encinal Avenue and Grand Street. In a separate incident in the 300 block of Island Drive at 3:13 a.m., police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, violation of probation and possession of marijuana.

Tampering with a vehicle — Someone poured sugar into the gas tank of a vehicle parked in the 1900 block of Webster Street.

Bike theft — Someone possibly looking to upgrade stole an unlocked bicycle from the 2600 block of St. Margaret Court but left another bike behind.

Possession of shopping cart — A 46-year-old man was arrested in the 1600 block of Oak Street on suspicion of unlawful possession of a Trader Joe's shopping cart. 

Trespass — A caller reported that someone was trespassing on a boat dock at Alameda Point.

Shoplifting and police pursuit — A 62-year-old man took merchandise into a dressing room at Kohl's department store at South Shore Center, hid the items in his backpack and left the store without paying, police said. When the man was contacted by police, he fled on his bicycle and led officers on a chase, according to the police report. Officers eventually caught up with the man and took him into custody. Police said the arrested man was already on probation for petty theft.

Auto theft — A vehicle was stolen from the 1300 block of Union Street. In a separate incident, a vehicle was stolen from the 100 block of Cardigan Bay.
